This project is located in a new development area in the Villaverde district of southern Madrid. Comprised of 176 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, it responds to an overall masterplan for the site which requested a single U-shaped block of eight storeys high and which has the appearance of a pitched roof. Within the confines of this brief, the design attempted to manipulate these architectural restrictions so as to abstract the normative idea of an apartment block. So whereas other neighbouring buildings adopt a symmetrical, double-pitched silhouette, here the traditional relationships of wall and roof are abstracted into a low, single pitch for the bulk of the block, and a small secondary pitch at the building´s front edge. The materials chosen are earthy-pink concrete for the façade panels and slate-blue concrete for the courtyard portico. A dense band of landscaping is located in between, to reach the effect of a rich panel of colours radiating outwards.
The 22 storey Mirador apartment building in Sanchinarro near Madrid is a collection of mini neighbourhoods staked vertically around a semi-public sky-plaza which offers views on the mountains. The 165 apartments are divided in a variety of different types for different life-styles and offer the residents high standards in terms of habitable space, natural light, panoramic views and comfort of fixtures. The building serves as a beacon for the neighbourhood.
The Izola Social Housing Development was the winning entry for two housing blocks in a 2003 competition convoked by the Slovenia Housing Fund, a government-run programme providing low-cost apartments for young families.
The housing blocks are set out on a hill with a view of Izola Bay on one side and of the surrounding hills on the other. Outdoor space and shade are important elements in the Mediterranean climate
